My research asks how engineered molecules can help materials and devices interact more effectively with biology. During my doctoral studies at Caltech, I engineered bioelectronic wearables for real-time biomarker detection. Across these projects, I became interested in a complementary challenge: engineering the molecular interfaces that enable devices and materials to interact with biological systems.
To address this, I joined the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington. Protein design has made rapid progress in creating proteins with defined static structures and has begun to achieve designed functions in solution, yet how proteins behave and function at material interfaces remains far less understood. My current research bridges this gap by merging computational design, materials science, and bioelectronics to build programmable protein–material interfaces.
By developing proteins that can sense and adapt to their physical environment, I aim to create a new generation of adaptive biomaterials, molecular sensing platforms, and biohybrid technologies.
